The Causative (Have Something Done)

  • Use: Utilitzem un verb causatiu quan volem parlar d’alguna cosa que algú altre ha fet per nosaltres o per una altra persona.

Structure: Subject + have / get + object + past participle

Examples:

  • The students get their essays checked. (present)
  • I’ll get my hair cut next week. (future)
  • He got his washing machine fixed. (past)

Passive Voice with Past Participle

Verbs with Two Objects

Give

  • Active: He gave me the book. (past)

First passive: I was given the book (by him).

Second passive: The book was given to me (by him).

Other verbs like this are: ask, offer, teach, tell, lend, promise, sell, throw.

Impersonal Passives

These structures can be used to say what people generally feel or believe. We can find them in formal contexts such as scientific writing or in news.

Examples:

Active voice: People say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Passive one: It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Passive two: Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder.
