Why Winter Outshines Summer: Weather, Activities, Holidays

Why Winter Is Better Than Summer

People often argue with others because they think that one thing is better than another, and sometimes they get in trouble. Comparisons include whether American football is better than soccer, whether dogs are better than cats, or whether summer or winter is better. This essay is focused on the last comparison. Although a lot of people prefer summer, I think winter is much better than summer due to the weather, seasonal activities, and the holidays.

Weather and Safety

Weather in the summer is known to be hot; people often go outside, but when the temperature is too high it can cause heatstroke, which can lead to the death of some people. The people most affected are those who work outside and have no shade to protect themselves from the sun. Workers such as farmers, construction workers, and roofers are especially affected by the sun. Outdoor sports like football, soccer, and baseball are also exposed to the sun; consequently, players have a greater possibility of suffering heatstroke. Also, in the summer there are many wildfires; high temperatures and dry environmental conditions contribute to the spread of fire.

On the other hand, winter is characterized by cold temperatures throughout the day. In winter, cloudy days are more common, which is good for sports and the jobs previously mentioned because workers are less exposed to direct sun and the climate is cooler. In this season there are not many fires because rain and moisture help firefighters extinguish flames. For these reasons people often prefer winter weather to summer weather.

Seasonal Activities

People normally want to do activities when they have free time. Depending on the season, these activities can vary. In summer, people can go to the beach, make sandcastles, play beach volleyball, go to an outdoor pool, or even attend a summer camp.

In winter, people can also do interesting things like skiing or snowboarding in the mountains, ice skating, hiking, building snowmen, having snowball fights, or making snow angels. After comparing both sets of activities, winter has more engaging, entertaining, and unique experiences.

Celebrations and Traditions

One of the main advantages that winter has over summer is the celebrations. In summer, there are not as many celebrations. In Spain the most traditional summer celebrations include Los Sanfermines in Pamplona, which is one of the most famous and thrilling events in Spain. There people participate in the running of the bulls, also known as El Encierro, an iconic traditional event where people run near the bulls trying to stay close while avoiding injury. People from around the world come to participate. It takes place from the 7th to the 14th of July; the run starts at exactly 8:00 a.m. A rocket called the Chupinazo is fired to announce the start. The bulls are released, guided by the cabestros that lead the way. The route is about 875 meters through the narrow streets of Pamplona and ends in the bullring. To finish the run, a second rocket is fired when all the bulls have entered safely in the arena. The duration of the run is only 2–4 minutes, but there are many risks of getting hurt or injured. Other summer celebrations include Las Fallas, La Tomatina, and El Carnaval de Cádiz.

In contrast, in winter there are many important celebrations like New Year’s Eve, Three Kings’ Day, and Christmas. The last one is the most important because it is celebrated practically all over the world. It is a traditional celebration that takes place on the 25th of December. Christmas is the most popular celebration because it brings people together who rarely meet due to distance, obligations, or lack of time. This day is magical for everyone: the elderly want to meet their relatives, and the children want to know what will be waiting under the tree. Christmas Eve gives us unforgettable moments. For example: it is the 24th of December and it is raining. Outside it is cold and dark, but inside the house we feel warm and cozy. The fireplace is glowing, filling the house with heat while I play with my cousins in my room and our family talk in the living room. You can hear their voices and their laughs; they seem very happy. It is 9:00 p.m., and even though I am enjoying the moment, time goes too slowly because I cannot stop thinking about the presents. For these reasons I think winter celebrations are better than summer ones: winter celebrations are a great opportunity to spend time with the people you love.

Conclusion

As has been shown in this essay, winter is much better than summer because it has weather that is safer for people who work outside and for some sports, it offers more engaging activities such as ice skating or snowboarding, and it provides more meaningful celebrations like Christmas. After considering these points, it can be said that winter is far better than summer.
