Understanding Medical Terminology and Concepts
Needle /ni:dl/ – a very thin pointed steel tube at the end of a syringe, which is pushed into your skin to put a drug or medicine into your body and to take out blood.
Syringe – it consists of a hollow plastic tube and a needle.
Viscous /viskas/ – a viscous liquid is very thick (almost solid) and sticky and does not flow easily.
Hickman Catheter – a central venous catheter most often used for the administration of chemotherapy or other medications, as well as for the withdrawal of blood for analysis.
Catheter – a thin tube that is put into your body to remove liquids.
Drip Into – to make something fall into something drop by drop.
Bloodstream – the blood flowing in your body (torrente sanguíneo).
Set In – if something sets in, especially something unpleasant, it begins and seems likely to continue for a long time.
Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia – chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is an uncommon type of cancer of the blood cells. The term “chronic” in chronic myelogenous leukemia indicates that this cancer tends to progress more slowly than acute forms of leukemia. The term “myelogenous” (my-uh-LOHJ-uh-nus) in chronic myelogenous leukemia refers to the type of cells affected by this cancer.

Umbilical Cord – a narrow tube of flesh that joins an unborn baby to its mother.

Plummet /plamit/ – to suddenly and quickly decrease in value or amount.
Blood Count – a medical examination of someone’s blood to see if it contains the right substances in the right amount (recuento de glóbulos).

Terminate – something ends.
Outpacing /autpeising/ – to go faster, do better, or develop more quickly than someone or something else (syn outstrip).
Dazzling – very impressive and attractive.
Dire /daia/ – extremely serious or terrible.
Renowned /rinaund/ – known and admired by a lot of people, especially for a special skill, achievement, or quality (syn famous).
Compelling Argument – an argument that makes you feel certain that something is true or that you must do something about it.
Brisk – quick and full of energy.
To Play Long Shots – an attempt or effort that is not likely to be successful.
Commodity – a product that is bought and sold.
