Understanding Common Medical Symptoms and Signs

Common Medical Symptoms and Signs

Hematological Diseases

Hematological diseases affect the blood and can cause various symptoms, including:

  • Tiredness: Often due to anemia, a condition characterized by low hemoglobin levels.
  • Bruising and Thrombocytopenia: Easy bruising and low platelet count can indicate bleeding disorders.
  • Hemophilia: An inherited condition affecting blood clotting.
  • Fever and Sweating: Common symptoms in various hematological conditions.
  • Skin Itching: Can occur in lymphoma and polycythemia vera.
  • Bone Pain: A sign of myeloma.
  • Abdominal Pain: May be present in sickle cell anemia.

Heart Murmurs

Heart murmurs are sounds produced by blood flow across heart valves. They are classified based on timing (systolic or diastolic) and character (harsh, bellows, etc.). The intensity of murmurs is graded on a scale of 1 to 6.

Cyanosis

Cyanosis is a bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes due to low oxygen levels in the blood. It can be caused by blood stagnation or a fall in oxygen saturation.

Rheumatic Disorders

Rheumatic disorders affect joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and tenderness in joints. Other symptoms may include fatigue, eye inflammation, rashes, and muscle pain.

Jaundice/Icterus

Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes caused by high bilirubin levels. It can be classified as pre-hepatic, hepatocellular, or cholestatic, depending on the underlying cause.

Facial Appearance

Facial appearance can provide clues about underlying medical conditions. Examples include:

  • Febrile Face: Flushed face common in high fever.
  • Pale Face: Seen in sepsis and rheumatic fever.
  • Myxedematous Face: Yellow, doughy skin with periorbital edema.
  • Mitral Face: Vermilion blush with cyanosis around the lips and nose.

Paralysis

Paralysis can be caused by damage to the upper or lower motor neurons or the peripheral nerves. Different types of paralysis present with specific symptoms.

Allergies

Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms like sneezing and itchy eyes to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Blood Pressure and Pulse

Blood pressure measurement and pulse examination are essential for assessing cardiovascular health. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Pulse rate should be between 60-100 beats per minute.

ECG Abnormalities

Electrocardiogram (ECG) can reveal abnormalities related to various conditions, including:

  • Pulmonary Embolism: Characterized by specific ECG changes like peaked P waves and inverted T waves.
  • Pericarditis: Shows concave ST elevation and PR depression.
  • Electrolyte Disturbances: Abnormalities in potassium, calcium, and magnesium levels can affect the ECG.
