Information technologies are undeniably impacting teaching methods in schools. The knowledge economy demands future workers who are familiar with information technology, and education must play a key role in meeting this need. While computer ownership has increased in recent years, a significant portion of households still lack access. Specifically, Spain currently reports 36.4% of households without a computer, with Catalonia at 29%.

Schools provide an essential environment for young people to develop computer skills and familiarize themselves with new communication tools like the Internet. Recent years have seen a significant push to integrate technology into schools, with initiatives at both the state and local levels leading to modernization and computerization. The student-to-computer ratio has been nearly halved, from 13 students per computer in 2002 to 6 students per computer in 2007.

The data becomes even more significant when considering internet connections, with 99% of schools having access. This connectivity facilitates better communication between teachers, and between teachers and students. However, a gap still exists between connected schools (99%) and connected households (45% in 2007). To bridge this gap, many schools offer online portals where students can access a variety of learning materials from home, including videos, 3D graphics, text, and articles. This access is particularly beneficial for schools in isolated locations, allowing them to connect with other institutions and share knowledge and perspectives.

While new technologies offer significant benefits, critics note that they can also exacerbate educational inequalities. Schools already grappling with material deprivation could face an additional challenge: technological and informational poverty. Although internet use and computer access are becoming more widespread, disparities remain based on factors such as country, region, and school type.

As the professional landscape increasingly demands computer literacy, students who lack access to necessary training and resources will be disadvantaged in their future job searches. However, the technological gap within societies like ours appears smaller compared to the digital divide separating Western classrooms from those in developing countries like Brazil.

With the rise of a knowledge-based economy, the most impoverished communities face a heightened risk of marginalization due to the gap between those with abundant information and those with limited access. A 1999 UN report highlighted internet access as the new dividing line between the rich and poor. South Asia, for example, comprises 23% of the global population but accounts for less than 1% of internet users. Even closer to home, Russia, with a literacy rate comparable to Spain (around 98%), has only 12.2% of its population using computers.

c. Technology in the Classroom

The emergence of modern education in the 19th century coincided with other significant societal shifts, including the rise of book culture. The mass distribution of books, newspapers, and other print media became a defining characteristic of industrial society, much like factories and machines. Education evolved to emphasize reading, writing, and arithmetic, providing individuals with access to a wealth of written knowledge. For many years, the textbook and notebook remained synonymous with the classroom experience.

However, the increasing use of computers and multimedia technologies in schools necessitates a shift in this traditional paradigm. Questions arise about the potential replacement of traditional books with electronic versions, or even personal laptops. What remains clear is that today’s students have grown up immersed in new technologies, including the internet, computers, and projectors. Curricula must adapt to reflect this new reality.

Visionaries and observers predict a classroom revolution with the advent of virtual reality and the concept of”classrooms without walls” The use of computers has undoubtedly expanded educational opportunities by:

  • Providing students with opportunities for independent study and work.
  • Facilitating research using up-to-date online resources.
  • Utilizing educational software that allows students to learn at their own pace, whether ahead of or behind the class.

Despite these advancements, a future where classrooms are filled with students working solely on computers, or remotely from home without direct teacher supervision, remains distant and unlikely. Statistics highlight the reasons behind this:

  • Insufficient computer availability, both at school and at home. Even in regions with lower student-to-computer ratios, such as Extremadura with 2.3 students per computer in 2007, access remains a challenge.
  • Computers in education are intended to complement, not replace, teachers. Students primarily use them for research, not as teacher substitutes.

Sociologist Ivan Illich offers another perspective on why traditional schools, as physical spaces of learning, will persist. He emphasizes the connection between the development of education and the economic demands of discipline and hierarchy. According to Illich, schools not only impart knowledge but also instill discipline and respect for authority—qualities valued in the workforce.

Beyond knowledge transmission, schools serve several other functions that are unlikely to disappear:

  • Custody: Schools act as places of compulsory attendance, keeping track of student whereabouts.
  • Occupational Role Distribution: The current system generally limits basic education to a certain age, typically around nineteen or twenty. Students are then channeled into specific branches of knowledge, such as science, literature, or economics, which often determine their university education and subsequent careers.
  • Value Transmission: Schools play a role in teaching values that vary across cultures and time periods.
  • Skill Development: Schools facilitate the acquisition of skills and knowledge deemed useful and necessary by society.

In essence, as philosopher Michel Foucault argued, the school-building represents the convergence of power relations (discipline, respect for authority, manners) and knowledge relations (acquired skills). Schools, therefore, act as shaping and molding future generations. However, a crucial question arises: Who determines the ideal characteristics of these future generations, and how should they be shaped?
