The Taliban and the World: A New Phase of Relations Without Formal Recognition
Five years after the Taliban returned to power, Taliban officials in Afghanistan have established working and practical relations with a number of countries. Although their government has not been widely recognized officially, Russia is still the only country that has formally recognized the Taliban government. Many Western countries have said that, before taking a similar step, they want to see domestic reforms in the field of human rights in Afghanistan.
According to UNESCO, since August 2021, more than two million Afghan girls have been deprived of education.
This week, the Taliban government is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its return to power, while some countries are expanding their relations with the government, even as the concerns of human rights monitors continue to grow.
UNESCO said in its statement that Afghanistan is the only country where girls and women are officially prohibited from receiving secondary and higher education. The organization said that this situation puts Afghanistan at risk of facing decades of wasted potential, greater poverty, and irreversible damage.
