The magnetron’s function is to produce microwave radiation.
What does the stirrer do?
The stirrer acts like a fan. It distributes the energy evenly over the food being cooked.
What effect do the radiation waves have upon the food in the microwave oven?
The radiation waves cause the molecules making up the food to vibrate. This vibration leads to friction between the molecules. It is this friction that causes the food to heat up and cook.

The microwaves penetrate the whole substance continuously and the heat works from the inside.
