Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

CLIL is a dual-focused educational approach where an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and language. It’s an approach where subjects like Science, Geography, History, Physical Education, and Arts are taught in a language different from the mother tongue.

CLIL is highly important because English often serves as a vehicular language in global contexts.

Interrelated Components of CLIL

  • Content: The subject matter. This refers to curricular subjects, apart from languages, which can be taught through the target language.
  • Cognition: Learning and thinking processes. This involves reasoning, creative thinking, and evaluating.
  • Communication: Language learning and using. One of the primary CLIL aims is to increase student talking time and reduce teacher talking time.
  • Culture: Developing cultural understanding and global citizenship. Learners in CLIL are encouraged to respect diverse ways of life and learn about different cultures, promoting an understanding of other societies.

CLIL Application Examples

  • Aims: To understand the Solar System, learn specific concepts, and acquire related vocabulary.
  • Content: The Big Bang in the formation of the Universe. Fascinating facts about the Solar System. The Sun as the main star of the Solar System. The Earth in the Solar System.
  • Cognition: Predicting information. Making comparisons, e.g., of different planets.
  • Communication: Pupils will discuss different animals in class.
  • Culture: To understand the origin of the names of the planets in the Solar System. Appreciate differences in planet names across cultures.
