Payroll & HR Skills: Sofia Singh’s Expertise
About Sofia Singh
Good morning, Melissa and Ashley. I hope you’re doing well. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. I’m excited for this opportunity.
I am Sofia Singh. I have a Master’s degree in IT and a strong foundation in commerce from my high school studies, where I focused on Accounting, Business Studies, and Statistics.
Professional Experience
- At Logic Digger Infotech, I managed monthly payroll for over 50 employees, ensuring accuracy by following the company’s rules and regulations. For payroll calculations, I used Excel and payroll software, Tally Prime. Additionally, I managed staff scheduling to ensure smooth operations. My role involved identifying shift gaps and finding suitable replacements.
- At FDM Group, I developed strong attention to detail by conducting validation and testing, for which I created defect reports using Excel.
- At Canada Post, I refined my customer service and administrative skills by handling inquiries and ensuring efficient operations.
Payroll Administration Expertise
In my previous role as a Payroll Administrative Specialist at Logic Digger Infotech, I used Tally Prime to process monthly payroll for over 50 employees. I was responsible for entering and verifying employees’ present days, paid leaves, and weekly offs from attendance, and then summing up these values for calculating paid days and salary calculations in Tally Prime. I generated the pay slips directly from the system. I used Tally Prime’s payroll reports to generate the employees’ earning statements. Additionally, I assisted in onboarding new employees by uploading their bank details within Tally Prime. I ensured that statutory deductions such as PF, ESI, and TDS were calculated correctly before processing payroll. I also created payroll audit summary reports using Excel that helped to reduce payroll errors.
Payroll Compliance Certification
I have a structured learning approach where I allocated time for PCP certification outside my work hours. It is easier for me to do this certification since I have prior payroll experience.
Current Pursuits
I believe in being transparent. During the recession period, I was impacted by a layoff from FDM Group. Since then, I have actively been in the job market while focusing on upskilling myself. I have enhanced my analytical skills by learning Power BI and Tableau and am currently completing the Google Data Analytics course on Coursera. Additionally, I am gaining proficiency in widely used payroll software such as ADP and QuickBooks to strengthen my payroll processing expertise in the Canadian job market.
Staying Up-to-Date with Payroll Laws
I stay updated with payroll laws by subscribing to industry newsletters and attending seminars and conferences to learn about the latest developments in payroll processing. I exchange my ideas and knowledge with other payroll professionals, and right now, as I am committed to completing PCP certification, that helps me to understand the Canadian payroll system.
Understanding of Leave Types and Salary Components
- Casual Leaves: These can be paid or unpaid, intended for unexpected personal needs, and typically range from 7 to 8 days per year.
- Paid Leaves: Employees are entitled to two weeks of vacation annually after completing one year of employment with the same employer.
- Weekly Off: According to Indian labor law, a minimum of one day off per week is required.
Salary Components
- Basic Salary (BS): This is the fixed amount of money an employee receives before taxes and other deductions.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): A sum of money added to a person’s salary to help cover the rising cost of living, often calculated as 10% of the Basic Salary.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): Part of expense that helps to cover rising cost of living. (BS+Da)*30%
- Total Salary (TS): TS=BS+DA+HRA
With this combined experience, I am confident in my ability to manage payroll, scheduling, and employee inquiries efficiently at Western University.
