My Journey to Medicine: Perseverance and Digital Skills
My Journey to Medicine: Perseverance and Purpose
I remember one day my parents told me: “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” But I’m not so sure that’s always true. Six years ago, during my final year of secondary school, I had to decide what professional career I wanted to pursue. I am a person who likes to help others, and I always liked the idea of one day saving lives. So, my first choice was to study medicine at Universidad Científica del Sur.
However, I also had a strong interest in interior design, a very different career that seemed unrelated to my primary goal. Ultimately, I had to make a definitive decision about my professional future. I chose medicine and began preparing for the entrance test to gain admission to the university and study what I desired so much.
Overcoming the First Hurdle
After much preparation and effort, I remember taking my first entrance test in January 2010. Naturally, I was feeling nervous and didn’t know what the result would be. The next day, I received the news that I had not been accepted. I felt very bad and frustrated, feeling that all my effort had been in vain. Fortunately, my parents always stood by me and motivated me to continue.
Eventually, I decided to take another exam. I was even more nervous than the first time, but the result was positive! I couldn’t believe it; I had done it. Today, in the fifth year of my studies, I can say that I have learned and gained a lot, and I feel happy about it.
The Digital Age: Impact on Youth and Skills
It is said that using computers and the internet develops important skills in young people, making them more adept at multitasking. It seems to me that the majority of young people have more skills than previous generations and are very accustomed to navigating and using different types of electronic devices.
Social Media: Connecting and Sharing
Facebook is an online social networking site. I like it because users can create profiles with photos and images, lists of personal interests, contact information, memorable life events, and other personal information, such as employment status. Users can then communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages, as well as a chat feature, and share content that includes website URLs, images, and video content. All day, I try to connect to read and view the latest updates, check my private messages, and comment on photos.
Facebook has affected people’s social lives and activities in different ways, depending on how it’s used. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to stay updated on news about their social environment and the world.
Skill Development Through Digital Use
The use of computers and the internet can improve skills like logic, reasoning, motor skills, and coordination. This depends on how young people use the computer. For instance, young people who regularly play games develop many of these skills, especially those related to coordination.
Similarly, young people who use social networks enhance their communication skills. Shy young people, in particular, can find social networks an opportunity to talk to others without the pressure of face-to-face interaction. Additionally, such services are usually free, requiring only an internet connection.
Balancing Digital Life and Responsibilities
However, young people often find handwriting tedious and may not read newspapers, magazines, or books because these activities bore them. Moreover, they may easily become interested in addictive games available on the internet, causing them to lose interest in their studies.
In conclusion, I agree that young people can use computers and the internet for beneficial purposes. In this way, they can apply their skills to productive tasks. Also, they can acquire more skills than previous generations, which can benefit their education. However, it’s important to pay attention to their primary responsibilities in life, such as their studies.
