Love and Revenge: Chronicle of a Death Foretold
Climax
The most exciting part was when Cristo Bedoya heard about the Vicario brothers’ plans. He searched everywhere for Santiago Nasar, who was at his girlfriend Flora Miguel’s house. When Santiago found out that the brothers were waiting to kill him, he left and headed home. However, Placida Linero, his mother, mistakenly thought he was already inside and closed the door to keep out the murderers. Cornered, Santiago Nasar was stabbed seven times by Pedro and Pablo Vicario.
Setting
The action takes place in a small, close-knit town. It is a time of significant social constraints, where money and social status are paramount, and women are educated for total dedication to the home.
Comparison Between Santiago Nasar and Bayardo San Roman
Bayardo San Roman is a man of about 30, wealthy, with extensive studies, faithful, and a lord of the town. Santiago Nasar, on the other hand, is a young man who achieved his economic position through hard work. He did not finish school and is a man of the field, who enjoys dealing with animals, and is cheerful and seductive.
Finally, two completely different characters are brought together by circumstance.
Is Santiago Nasar’s Death Justified?
No, for several reasons. No one had any evidence that Santiago Nasar was to blame for Angela Vicario’s loss of virginity. He was neither allowed to defend himself nor informed of what was going to happen. The reasons for this death are not sufficient.
Who is Guilty?
The guilty party is the society that implemented the ideology that the only way to reclaim honor is by killing the person, guilty or not. And the people, for not believing in the intimidation of the Vicario brothers and not taking the necessary measures to prevent Santiago Nasar’s murder.
Relationship with Current Events
This story does not have much in common with today because we live in a different time, where virginity is not essential for a woman to be considered good and where women can highlight their qualities. We are also fighting for the equality of men and women.
However, there are still people of power and money who intend to impose themselves in all circumstances. We now think twice before committing a crime as we fight for freedom and democracy, while social influences continue to affect our decisions.
Narrative Point of View
The story is told in both the third and first person. It is universal and non-linear because the facts are not presented in the order they occurred.
How Does the Action Develop?
It is developed dynamically because the facts are recounted as if they are occurring as they are needed.
This narrative technique uses different literary techniques in relating the facts, such as descriptive narratives in a great extension of the work, although to a lesser extent, dialogue.
Use of Language
This work predominantly uses simple, colloquial language, the language of the people.
What is the Novel’s Aim?
The novel aims to present the social reality of a people in previous years, where a woman was accepted for the mere fact of remaining a virgin, and where honor and vengeance were the catalysts for a life in which violence was the determining factor in resolving conflicts.
What Was the Author’s Intention?
The author’s intention in writing this novel is to entertain and, at the same time, show the details of the past that might be real, with a touch of fantasy.
Personal Opinion
This is an excellent work that reflects an era in which human life was devalued and where social constraints guided people’s actions. It has an excellent way of exposing the facts, and at no time did I, as a reader, lose interest.
