L.A. Movie: A Noir Detective Analysis
L.A. Movie: Plot Summary
L.A. Movie tells the story of Lenny Samuel, a private detective in Los Angeles. One night, after watching a film at the cinema, he meets the famous actress Gail Lane when her boyfriend, Mike Devine, crashes his car into Lenny’s. Lenny helps Mike get home, but someone hits him on the head and he becomes unconscious.
The next day, Lenny’s old friend Rik Roma, head of security at Magic Movie Productions, offers him a job. The studio has received death threats against Gail Lane. The anonymous emails say: “Death Behind the Door will be the death of Gail Lane. Stop the movie or we’ll stop her.” Lenny is hired to protect her.
During filming, accidents happen. Gail’s stunt double, Josie, falls from a rope and is seriously injured. The rope was cut on purpose. Later, in Buenos Aires, Lenny saves Gail from a falling stone ball in the Recoleta Cemetery. In Istanbul, Lenny disguises himself as actor Brent Foster (Gail’s co-star) to be his driving double. During a car chase, real gunmen chase them, shoot at them, and they end up trapped on the Galata Bridge while it opens. A Turkish military helicopter rescues them.
Meanwhile, Gail confesses to Lenny that she is being blackmailed. Somebody has old photographs of her dancing with Vincent Calab, a dangerous gangster known as “Mad Vince.” The blackmailer wants $250,000.
At the end of the story, Vincent Calab breaks into the studio chief Homer Frank‘s office. He demands his money back because he had laundered illegal money in the film. He tries to kill Gail but Lenny and Gail’s bodyguards (Annie and Arabella) stop him. Later, Lenny discovers the truth: the real blackmailer is Rik Roma, his own friend. Lenny follows Rik to a phone booth, sees him take the money and leave the photos. Lenny recovers the money and returns it to Gail without telling her who the blackmailer was.
Gail leaves the film industry and introduces Lenny to her secret fiancé, Senator Theo Democrates. Lenny ends up with no money, no girlfriend and no job. He goes fishing at his cabin at Crystal Lake.

Essays
1. The Character of Lenny Samuel
Lenny Samuel, the protagonist of L.A. Movie by Philip Prowse, is a private investigator in Los Angeles. He is in his late thirties, has dark hair, brown eyes, and scars from his time as an amateur boxer. He is not rich, but he is honest, hard-working, and lives by his own moral code.
From a professional point of view, Lenny is a very good detective. First, he is observant. In Istanbul, he realizes that the car chase is not part of the film because the camera trucks are too far behind. Second, he is brave. He saves Gail Lane’s life twice. Third, he is intelligent. He discovers that Rik Roma is the blackmailer by disguising himself as a phone repairman.
However, Lenny is not successful in terms of money or fame. At the end of the story, he has no client, no money, and no girlfriend. In conclusion, Lenny is a successful detective in terms of skills and morality, but not in terms of material rewards. He represents the classic noir detective: an honest man in a corrupt world.
2. The Real Villain
The story has several antagonists, but the real villain is Rik Roma. While Vincent Calab is a violent gangster, Rik is a traitor. Rik is Lenny’s old friend from the LAPD, and Lenny trusts him completely. Rik hires Lenny to “protect” Gail, but in reality, he wants to keep her alive so he can continue blackmailing her. Rik’s betrayal is more painful because it comes from a friend. Calab is openly a gangster, but Rik hides behind his uniform and his friendship with Lenny. Betrayal is a worse crime than violence.
3. Appearance Versus Reality
One of the most important themes in L.A. Movie is the contrast between appearance and reality. Throughout the novel, things and people are never what they seem. Lenny changes his appearance to survive, Hollywood hides crime behind glamour, and Rik Roma hides his criminal nature behind a badge of friendship. The only character who does not pretend is Lenny: he is honest, and that is why he suffers at the end.

Opinion
In my opinion, L.A. Movie is an entertaining and well-structured detective novel. The best aspect is the character of Lenny Samuel. I like that the ending is not a typical happy ending; it is realistic and ironic. The weakest aspect is that some secondary characters are not fully developed. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys detective stories, action, and suspense.
