Essential Business Terms

Board (consejo de administración)
The directors, top management, or council that makes most decisions in a company.
Bond (Bono)
Fixed-income securities issued by corporations and governments to raise capital.
Break-even Point (Punto de equilibrio)
The point at which total cost and total revenue are equal, resulting in neither profit nor loss for a business.
Budget (presupuesto)
A spending plan for a business based on its income and expenses.
Campaign (campaña)
A strategic sequence of steps and activities that promote a product, service, or goal.
Capital
The money used to build, run, or grow a business. It can also refer to the net worth (or book value) of a business.
CEO
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the highest-ranking individual in a company.
Close a Deal (Cerrar un trato)
To bring negotiations to an end by reaching an agreement.
Competitor
Other businesses that offer the same or similar goods and services to customers.
Downsize (hacer recortes de personal)
The permanent reduction of a company’s workforce, often through eliminating positions or divisions.
Fire (despedir)
When an employer terminates an individual’s employment.
Goal (objetivo)
A predetermined target that a business or individual plans to achieve within a set period.
Hire (contratar)
To employ someone for a job.
Invest / Investment (invertir / inversión)
Providing capital to businesses, typically in exchange for a share in future profits.
Invoice (facturar)
An itemized list recording the products or services provided to customers, requesting payment.

The process of introducing a new product into the market for initial sale.

The proportion of total sales in an industry controlled by a particular business.

An individual or group with an interest, often financial, in the success of a business.
