Biography: José Ortega y Gasset
Philosopher, writer, and journalist
Madrid, 1883 – Madrid, 1955
Son of Ortega Munilla, he studied at the Jesuit College of Miraflores and the University of Madrid, where he earned his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1904 with the thesis The Millennium.
He also studied at the universities of Leipzig, Berlin, and Marburg with the master of Neo-Kantianism, Hermann Cohen. In Marburg, he developed a passion for science and German philosophy, stating, “Four-fifths of its intellectual being,” as he wrote in his book Mission of the University.
Upon his return to Spain, he succeeded Nicolás Salmerón in the chair of metaphysics at the University of Madrid (1911). Many generations of philosophers were drawn to his teachings until 1936.
In 1923, he founded the Revista de Occidente (Review of the West), which, along with its publishing house, became the primary conduit for European philosophical ideas entering Spain.
