National Highways (NH)

National Highways connect major cities, state capitals, industrial centers, and border areas. They are maintained by the Central Government (e.g., NHAI) and are designed for high traffic volume and speed.

Reconnaissance Survey

A preliminary survey to obtain general information about potential routes. Objectives include studying topography, identifying alternatives, assessing drainage, and estimating costs.

Nagpur Road Plan (1943–1963)

  1. National Highways (NH): Connect major cities and ports.
  2. State Highways (SH): Connect district headquarters within a state.
  3. Major District Roads (MDR): Link markets and towns.
  4. Other District Roads (ODR): Connect rural areas to MDRs.
  5. Village Roads (VR): Provide basic rural connectivity.

Ideal Road Alignment

An ideal alignment is short, easy (gentle gradients), safe (adequate sight distance), economical, and comfortable. Factors like topography, drainage, and environmental impact are critical for durability and sustainability.

Unit 2: Geometric Design of Highways

Key Definitions

  • Kerb: A raised boundary between the carriageway and footpath.
  • Sight Distance: The length of road visible to a driver.
  • OSD: Minimum distance required to safely overtake.
  • ISD: Provided when OSD is not feasible.
  • Headlight Sight Distance: Distance visible at night.

Gradients and Curves

Types of gradients include Ruling, Limiting, Exceptional, and Minimum. Vertical curves are categorized as Summit (convex) or Valley (concave) to ensure safety and comfort.

Superelevation

The transverse slope provided on horizontal curves to counteract centrifugal force, reducing skidding and overturning risks.

Unit 3: Construction and Materials

Pavement Types

  • Flexible Pavement: Bituminous layers that distribute loads through a granular structure.
  • Rigid Pavement: Cement concrete slabs that distribute loads via slab action.

Soil and Aggregate Testing

Key tests include the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) for subgrade strength, Aggregate Impact Value for toughness, and various bitumen tests like Penetration and Ductility to ensure material quality.

Water Bound Macadam (WBM) Construction

A process involving the spreading of coarse aggregates, rolling, application of screenings, and grouting with water to create a dense, stable road base.

Pavement Structure

A typical flexible pavement consists of the Subgrade, Sub-base, Base Course, Binder Course, and Surface/Wearing Course.
