Finding Meaning in Life: Camus, Beauvoir, and Mill

Finding Meaning in Life: A Philosophical Exploration

PHIL 1001 Essay Prompt #3 – Meaning

Meaning is found in life through experiences that bring happiness and motivate us to persevere through hardship. These experiences vary in significance but are ultimately those we cherish because they hold worth, value, and importance. They also challenge us to confront hardships and foster personal growth.

Camus: Embracing the Absurd

For Camus, meaning arises from confronting life’s inherent absurdity and meaninglessness. It involves living life to the fullest while acknowledging our existence as rational beings in an irrational world. Sisyphus, whom Camus encourages us to imagine as happy, exemplifies this. The absurd hero finds joy in the seemingly meaningless task of eternally rolling a boulder uphill.

Beauvoir: The Path to Genuine Freedom

Beauvoir suggests that meaning is discovered through achieving genuine freedom. This involves combining the values of the adventurer and the passionate person with a concern for the freedom of others. The adventurer engages in life projects without fixating on the goal. A genuinely free person blends the adventurer’s skepticism towards received values with a deep sense of responsibility for their actions and their impact on the world. The passionate individual cares deeply about their goal but must recognize the limits of their passion’s effect on others. “Passion is converted to genuine freedom only if one destines his existence to other existences” β€œTo will oneself free is also to will others free.”

Mill: Maximizing Higher Pleasures

Mill posits that the meaning of life lies in maximizing higher pleasures and promoting the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.

Personal Reflection: Camus’ Influence

Camus’ philosophy resonates most deeply with me. I believe acknowledging life’s absurdity is a crucial step. Overcoming this realization and choosing to live life to the fullest is how one finds meaning. I constantly strive to avoid succumbing to negativity and instead focus on pursuing higher pleasures. While it’s easy to relapse into negative thinking, maintaining optimism and drive diminishes the significance of life’s absurdity.
