Essential First Aid Procedures for Accident Victims

1. Operations for Assisting an Accident Victim

  • Monitor Pulse: Check for its presence.
  • Ensure Breathing: Verify effective respiration.
  • Assess Injuries: Inquire about symptoms.
  • Control Bleeding.
  • Immobilize Serious Injuries: Cover and stabilize.
  • Immobilize Fractures: Do not attempt to set serious fractures; manage minor injuries appropriately.
  • Care for the Injured: Wash and wrap, ensure the victim does not drink or take drugs, and instill calm.

2. Treating Wounds

Simple Wound Procedure:

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Clean instruments.
  • Using sterile material, wash the wound with hydrogen peroxide.
  • Apply an antiseptic to the wound.
  • Do not blow on the wound.
  • Place sterile gauze over a simple wound.
  • Do not touch the wound with cotton.
  • Cover with a sterile dressing.
  • Do not apply ointments.

Complicated Wound Procedure:

  • Do not clean or probe the wound.
  • Apply gauze.
  • Transport the injured person to a hospital for professional care immediately.

3. Fracture Treatment

Treatment Steps:

  • Control any bleeding.
  • Cover the wound with gauze.
  • Do not attempt to set the bone back in place.
  • Apply immobilization using splints and a sling (scarf).

What Not to Do:

  • Do not wash or explore the wound.
  • Do not touch bone fragments.
  • Do not push on the fracture site.
  • Do not tie splints directly over the wound.
  • Do not delay transport unnecessarily.

4. Procedure for Spinal Cord Fractures

If You Are Alone:

  • Monitor breathing effectiveness.
  • Do not touch or move the injured person.
  • Wrap the person for warmth/protection.
  • Seek urgent medical help.
  • Do not move the person’s head or body.

If Others Are Present:

  • Move the injured person only with coordinated movements, if absolutely necessary.
  • Ensure at least four people are present to mobilize the victim, ideally with health professionals trained in technical movement.

5. First Aid for Burns

Guidelines:

  • Assess the severity and the victim’s status.
  • Check for bleeding.
  • Remove metal items (watches, rings, etc.).
  • Remove clothing impregnated with chemicals.
  • If clothing is on fire, smother the flames with blankets.
  • Remove cloth and cut away pieces stuck to the skin.
  • Do not attempt to break blisters on the skin.
  • Cool the burnt area with running water.
  • Cover the burn with clean cloth.
  • Do not allow the injured person with limb burns to walk.
  • If burns are extensive, position the injured person lying face-up.
  • If burns are on the face or neck, keep these areas elevated.
  • Do not force the victim into a position that causes pain or further injury.
  • Do not apply ointments to the burn wound before cooling it thoroughly.
  • If the burn is serious, transport the victim to the hospital as soon as possible.
  • If the burn is in the eye, wash it with water, apply a patch, and move the victim to emergency services.

6. Action for Electrical Current Accidents

Action Steps:

  • Cut the electricity supply before touching the injured person.
  • If the power cannot be cut, step away and use insulating elements (poles, dry ropes, etc.) to move the victim away from contact.
  • Check breathing and circulation, applying Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) if required.
  • Cover any burns, noting that electrical burns may appear minor externally but be very deep internally.
  • Transport the victim of electrocution to a hospital immediately to assess internal damage caused by the electrical current.
