Engaging Christmas English Lessons for Primary Students
Engaging Christmas Activities for Primary English Learners
This document outlines engaging activities for teaching the topic of Christmas to sixth-grade primary education students. The primary aim is to propose effective activities for sixth-grade primary education during the Christmas period. To achieve this, the document first contextualizes the topic within the educational framework, then discusses the importance of culture in English language lessons. Subsequently, various activities are proposed, followed by key conclusions and a bibliography.
Legal Framework for Cultural Awareness
The proposed activities align with the legal framework, specifically The Organic Law 2/2006 of May 3rd on Education, modified by Organic Law 8/2013 of December 9th for the Improvement of Educational Quality. This legislation establishes seven key competencies for primary education students, fostering their personal, social, and professional development.
Key Competencies and Cultural Awareness
One crucial competence is Cultural Awareness and Expression, which involves acquiring knowledge of a different language to meet communicative needs and gain a broader understanding of the lifestyle, thought processes, and behaviors of people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, Royal Decree 126/2014 of February 28th, which sets the Minimum Teaching Requirements for Primary Education, includes General Stage Objective D: “To know, understand, and respect different cultures and the differences between people.”
In Castilla y León, Order EDU/519/2014 of June 17th and Decree 51/2007 of May 17th affirm that the Cultural Awareness and Expression competence significantly contributes to achieving Communicative Competence, a core objective in language teaching. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to present information relevant to children’s experiences, fostering their interest in new cultures. Developing positive attitudes towards language and culture broadens their worldview and promotes greater tolerance.
Importance of Motivation in Language Learning
Motivation is another critical factor in language acquisition, as it enhances the learning process. Celebrating Christmas and other seasonal events in class can be highly engaging and enjoyable for children.
Learning Objectives for Christmas Activities
To prepare activities for sixth-grade primary education, the following objectives are set:
- To use ICT to communicate in a foreign language.
- To use previous knowledge and experiences to learn new vocabulary and structures related to Christmas more effectively.
- To participate orally in guessing games and songs using verbal and non-verbal procedures.
- To write a Christmas letter.
- To understand the importance of respecting different cultures around the world.
- To display a respectful and cooperative attitude.
Proposed Christmas English Activities
Once the objectives are set, the activities proceed as follows:
Warm-up and Vocabulary Presentation
The session begins with a warm-up activity to help students feel confident and comfortable speaking English. This is followed by the presentation stage, where Christmas-related vocabulary is introduced through an interactive game called “Which Flashcard is Missing?” In this activity, flashcards are displayed to students, and the teacher secretly removes one. Students then guess which flashcard is missing.
Interactive Learning with Technology
Next, students watch a video on the history of Christmas. Following the video, they participate in a Christmas quiz using the Kahoot! application on their tablets, working collaboratively in groups.
Collaborative Project Work
The practice stage involves a group project where children research Christmas traditions in English-speaking countries online. They then summarize their findings in writing and present the information on a large display board, incorporating relevant pictures.
Each group then presents their findings to their classmates. To conclude this stage, students engage in peer assessment, evaluating other groups’ work. This task effectively integrates various skills and promotes autonomy through self and peer evaluation.
Creative Production and Peer Assessment
Finally, in the productive stage, students create a Christmas card for their family or a pen pal. They decorate the cards with traditional English Christmas symbols and explain the significance of these symbols in England.
Benefits of These Activities
These activities offer numerous benefits. Students develop communicative competence through both cooperative and individual tasks, utilizing new technologies and their creativity to design cards. The effectiveness stems from students discovering Christmas traditions in English-speaking countries, which significantly boosts their motivation. Furthermore, these activities foster several key competencies, including:
- Digital and ICT Competence
- Linguistic Communication Competence
- Learning to Learn Competence
- Cultural Awareness and Expression Competence
Evaluation Strategies
Evaluation will consider criteria linked to learning standards, key competencies, and content. For instance, within ‘Block 2: Oral Production,’ the content ‘Displaying curiosity and interest in learning about the people and culture of countries where the foreign language is spoken’ aligns with the evaluation criterion: ‘Knowing sociocultural aspects and basic, concrete, and significant sociolinguistic aspects, and applying that knowledge to produce proper speech, respecting the most basic communicative conventions.’ The related learning standard is: ‘Participates in face-to-face conversations or by technical means, which enable us to see the face and gestures of the partner, in which establishes social contact, exchanging personal information or emotions.’ This corresponds to the following key competencies:
- Cultural Awareness and Expression Competence
- Linguistic Communication Competence
- Social and Civic Competences
Student and Teacher Evaluation
Student evaluation will occur at three stages:
- Initial Assessment: To establish a baseline understanding.
- Formative Assessment: Throughout the activities, to assess content achievement, provide feedback for improvement, and gather information in the teacher’s diary.
- Summative Assessment: At the end, to determine the overall level of student achievement.
Student self-evaluation is also crucial, facilitated by a wall chart where each student assesses their own progress and attitudes. Additionally, the teaching process itself will be evaluated using a rubric questionnaire to reflect on daily teaching practices.
Conclusion: Culture in Foreign Language Education
In conclusion, the ultimate goal of foreign language education is to develop students’ communicative competence, with culture being a vital sub-competence. Teachers play a crucial role in introducing students to relevant cultural knowledge of English-speaking countries. Seasonal events, such as Christmas, serve as excellent tools for this purpose, enhancing students’ attitudes, interest, understanding, and motivation in learning English. Furthermore, these events are rich with sociocultural and historical information, providing a holistic learning experience.
