Poetry Corner: Reflections on Life and Nature

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

This classic poem by Robert Frost describes a traveler’s brief pause in a snowy forest. The owner of the woods lives in the village, unaware of the traveler’s stop. The traveler’s horse gives its harness bells a shake, seemingly questioning the halt without a nearby farmhouse.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Leisure by W. H. Davies

W. H. Davies’ poem “Leisure” reflects on the hurried pace of modern life and the lack of time people dedicate to simply observing and appreciating the natural world and beauty around them.

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
