Contemporary Perspectives: Media, Justice, and Well-being

Reality TV: Entertainment or More?

Reality shows are a very popular form of entertainment on TV nowadays. There are dozens of different types of programs, such as singing contests, cooking competitions, or living in the jungle.

Firstly, people at home can choose which types of program they want to watch, depending on what they are interested in. Some people like watching singing or cooking competitions, while others prefer watching programs about building houses or travelling around the world. In addition, reality TV programs are a great opportunity to discover talented singers, dancers, or chefs. Several people who take part in these programs get jobs as a result of being on TV.

On the other hand, some people think that reality TV is an easy way for them to become famous. However, most successful singers, actors, or chefs have worked hard all their lives and are good at their job because of their hard work. Also, sometimes the people on the shows have to do really difficult or dangerous things. The competitions are very hard, and there is only one winner. Another disadvantage is that some programs always follow the same format, and this can be boring to watch.

To sum up, I think that reality TV is good entertainment. There is a lot of variety, which means there is something for everyone, and they are interesting to watch.

Katia’s Birthday Surprise: A Short Story

It was Katia’s 20th birthday, and she was looking forward to seeing her friends. They were meeting at Mamma Mia’s, her favourite Italian restaurant, for a special birthday dinner. Katia was excited and got to the restaurant at exactly 7 o’clock, the time they had arranged to meet. She looked around for a familiar face, but no one had arrived yet. So she decided to wait outside and stood patiently in the warm evening sunshine.

The restaurant quickly filled up with customers, but none of them were Katia’s friends. “Where are they?” she thought. At half past seven she was still waiting, so she called her best friend Isa. “Why doesn’t she answer her phone?” Katia asked herself. Then she called Jonty, Alex, and Yoko, but they didn’t answer either. “What’s going on?” she wondered.

At 8 o’clock Katia went home. Her friends had forgotten her birthday, and she felt lonely and miserable. She opened the front door and walked into the dark house. The living room door was closed. “How strange,” she thought, “because she always left it open.” Nervously, she opened the door. Suddenly, the lights went on, and all her friends jumped up and shouted, “Surprise!” So they hadn’t forgotten, and in the end, it was the best birthday ever.

My Imaginary Sanctuary: A Descriptive Essay

Everyone has an imaginary place where they hide from real-world troubles and worries. I find this practice extremely helpful for my emotional well-being. One of the exercises I typically perform is going to my imaginary place, where I feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable, and where I can get rid of negative emotions and intrusive thoughts.

I have enjoyed nature since my childhood, so my imaginary place is the wildlife located far away from cities and people. My imaginary place has abundant fresh air, filled with the rich smells of wood and flowers. This place is ideal to visit when I feel stressed and need to escape negative emotions and thoughts that bother me.

Finally, there is a specific location within my imaginary place that I visit only on special occasions. Sometimes, I need to step out of my comfort zone and try something challenging. This place is both spectacular and dangerous.

To summarize, my imaginary place reflects the diversity of wildlife and my emotional experience. It is a place where one can live in harmony with nature, and where the setting can become an inseparable part of oneself.

Skyfall Film Review: A Cinematic Thriller

Skyfall is one of the best action films in recent years. Released in 2012, it stars Daniel Craig as secret agent James Bond and Spanish actor Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the film’s villain.

The plot involves a genius computer hacker, an ex-spy. He seeks revenge on the organisation he used to work for, and James Bond must prevent this. There are a lot of exciting action scenes as Bond pursues him around the world. Can he stop him before it’s too late?

The film is set in a variety of international locations, including Istanbul, Shanghai, Macau, London, and Scotland, which contributes to its global atmosphere. The soundtrack is impressive and includes the theme song “Skyfall,” performed by English singer Adele. The acting is also of a very high standard, and Bardem brings his character to life with a dazzling, memorable performance.

I highly recommend Skyfall, especially if you enjoy action films. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end, and I am sure you will not regret watching it.

Prison System: Effectiveness and Alternatives

There is no doubt that crime is a problem today, but is prison the right answer? Wealth, education, and healthcare are increasingly available to everyone in modern society; yet, crime and violence are also on the increase. Despite this, I do not believe that prison is an effective response to the problem.

It is true that many types of crime are so serious that society needs to be protected from the criminals involved. For example, people who commit murder or use physical violence are a danger to society and must be removed from the streets. Furthermore, there are some criminals who have become habitual offenders, and the only way to stop their behavior is to incarcerate them.

However, there are many reasons against sending all criminals to prison. Firstly, prisons are often harsh environments that can exacerbate negative behaviors. Secondly, many minor criminals who are incarcerated learn how to commit crimes more effectively and often re-offend upon release. In addition, imprisonment is a very expensive way to deal with these individuals. Finally, the justice system can make mistakes, and some innocent people are wrongly imprisoned.

In conclusion, prison is a necessary option for the justice system when dealing with violent criminals or habitual offenders, but it should not be used for everyone.

Computer Games: Educational Value for Children?

Video game sales, which are rising faster than ever, are now higher than book sales among children aged 8 to 16. Worried about the educational implications of this, many people believe the government should encourage young people to read more and play less.

I am against the idea that computer games are inherently bad or lack educational value.

I strongly believe that people who make such claims often lack sufficient knowledge about what many computer games can offer.

Imagining that games offer no more than pure entertainment, some adults condemn them without truly understanding their potential. The types of games these critics often have in mind are the violent, shooting, and killing genres. However, if these individuals played games like The Sims or Civilization, where players must think strategically and plan their next moves, they would realize how much these games can teach. By playing these games, they would also discover the significant amount of reading and numerical skills involved.

In conclusion, I disagree with those who criticize all computer games, but I am in favour of young people playing a healthy variety of games. Choosing to play games that teach you how to build towns or theme parks is great fun and educational too.

Academic Pressure and Teen Well-being

Nowadays, many teenagers worldwide spend most of their time studying to achieve top grades, secure a university place, and obtain a good job. Consequently, there is often little time left for hobbies or socialising.

One of the main causes is the prevalence of exams. These are stressful experiences, and most students undertake a significant number of them throughout their school careers. That is why some schools are considering alternative assessment methods, such as projects or coursework. Not only are these methods more enjoyable and less stressful, but they also de-emphasize memorization and allow students to demonstrate other skills, including creativity, independent learning, and teamwork.

Another reason could be the demanding schedules that youngsters have nowadays. After a long day at school, students often have several more hours of homework or extra classes in the evening, leading to constant exhaustion. In addition, studying while exhausted is unproductive. To tackle this problem, students should plan regular breaks and, ideally, engage in outdoor exercise. This will enable them to work faster and concentrate for longer periods.

To summarize, this problem is serious and widespread. The number of exams is one cause, and students’ busy schedules are another. Therefore, both schools and students ought to take action to remedy the situation.

Fast Food Tax: A Solution to Public Health?

Nowadays, more people are affected by health issues related to mass-produced food. Some people believe the only solution is to make fast food less affordable by taxing it heavily. Despite the severity of the problem, I believe this approach is misguided. Increasing the tax on fast food would unfairly penalize individuals and may not necessarily bring about the desired health benefits.

Firstly, fast food is about more than just nutrition. Many teenagers spend money on fast food not because they need to eat out, but because this is how they socialise. Fast-food restaurants provide a safe, convenient place for young people to meet friends. Denying people a small pleasure in life could negatively affect their social lives or overall happiness.

Another important point is that if the reason for taxing fast food is to reduce obesity, it may be ineffective. It is true that fast food is high in sugar, salt, and fat, all of which contribute to weight gain and are detrimental to health.

However, we also know that other factors contribute to the risk of obesity, such as lack of exercise and inappropriate portion sizes. While home-cooked food is generally healthy, this is not always the case.

On the other hand, I do understand the viewpoint of those who argue that drastic action is needed. If fast food were taxed and became expensive, people would be compelled to seek out healthier options. To conclude, although imposing a higher tax on fast food could have some positive effects, these would be outweighed by the drawbacks. What we truly need is greater awareness of diet and more affordable healthy food options.
