Comprehensive Sex Education: Unit 10

Sexuality is a complex reality

Biopsychosocial comprises 2 fields:

  1. Everything in our body is sexed, not just the genitals
  2. Our psyche, social, and cultural organization are sexed and affect our lives

From birth, we are sexual beings and must be educated integrally. Questions around sexuality must consider the 3 areas: biopsychological, psychological, and sociocultural.

Responsibilities and Education

  • Parents are responsible, but educators should also be included in the programming
  • Encourage a climate of naturalness and confidence
  • Help children self-regulate their sexual behavior with standards of respect and privacy
  • Encourage the child to question and discuss sexuality openly

Child Development and Sexuality

Help children discover and identify with their own sexuality. Encourage self-esteem and respect for all body parts equally.

Gender Identity and Roles

Children develop sexual identity and roles from a young age. It is essential to support their self-rating and understanding of gender roles.

Education and Equality

Strategies to avoid discrimination include coeducation, promoting individuality, and breaking stereotypes. Educators should involve parents and create a safe environment for discussing sexuality.
