Chile’s Maritime Strength: National Merchant Marine Development
Chile’s Maritime Commitment
As Chilean professionals and members of the DGTM and MM, we are deeply invested in the well-being of the entire Navy, the National Merchant Marine, and the nation’s shipping and civil society.
Pillars of Maritime Strength
Reasons for Our Commitment:
- Moral Reserve and Naval Tradition: Honoring Chile’s naval heritage and bringing glory to the nation.
- Naval Power Resources: Recognizing the importance of reserves for Chile’s Naval Power.
- Economic and Social Impact: Understanding its role as a financial risk, economic activity, and a pillar of Chile’s maritime destiny.
Fostering the National Merchant Fleet
The core idea behind the DGTM and GM’s action is to support the growth of the national merchant fleet. This involves creating conditions for effective material and professional development under the national flag, ensuring healthy competition. Our goal is to secure efficient and economical shipping for the common good of all Chileans, both now and in the future.
Progress Through Resources and Personnel
Beyond revitalizing the legislative framework, progress hinges on the availability of maritime resources and trained personnel. Enhancing shipping capacity means reducing dangerous navigation. This requires a strict minimum set of skills, seamanship, and safety standards. As a nation, we must provide efficient navigation services with fleets committed to the highest safety standards.
Leadership and Teamwork in Shipping
Just as the success or failure of a shipping company depends on its leaders’ business management skills, it also relies heavily on the capabilities of its captains, officers, and crew, both at sea and ashore.
Ultimately, everything depends on the integrated and consistent participation of all parties and professional human resources, working together harmoniously with a shared awareness of their common purpose.
International Maritime Engagement
In line with this commitment, the DGTM and MM actively participate in international bodies like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Network for Regional Cooperation Operational Maritime Authorities (ROCRAM). This engagement allows us to share our maritime policy globally and adopt international conventions that facilitate shipping operations on all scales, forming an integrative framework.
Celebrating Maritime Heritage
Like many nations, Chile observes World Maritime Day. This day unites thousands of dedicated individuals in the navigation industry—the most international of industries—in a spirit of fellowship, transcending race and climate.
Establishing a National Merchant Marine Day
Recognizing its integral role, the DGTM and GM are promoting the establishment of a specific day to celebrate the National Merchant Marine.
Choosing a Commemorative Date
The National Merchant Marine is a complex entity with intricate historical development. Selecting a date to commemorate its Day requires careful consideration. This chosen day should serve as an occasion for all men and women who work in and believe in Chile’s maritime destiny to unite, celebrating their shared passion above all diversity.
Several criteria are being considered for choosing a meaningful date to be recognized as the Day of the National Merchant Marine.
