Biological Organization and Characteristics of Life

Levels of Biological Organization

  • Tissue: A group of cells that are connected together.
  • Organ: Part of an organism. An organ is a group of tissues that are structured together to perform a certain task in the body.
  • Organ System: A biological system that includes a group of organs working together to perform a task.
  • Organism: An individual living thing. Can be an animal, plant, fungi, etc.
  • Population: A population consists of individuals of the same species. Typically, a population lives in the same area and can reproduce together.
  • Community: Multiple populations of different species make up a community.
  • Ecosystem: Includes all of the living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) parts.
  • Biome: A large geographical region characterized by a specific set of environmental conditions, such as climate, soil type, and vegetation.
  • Biosphere: The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth occupied by living organisms.

Characteristics of Living Organisms

  • Metabolism: The total sum of all chemical reactions that happen inside a living organism to sustain life.
  • DNA: The molecule that carries the genetic instructions used in the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all living organisms.
  • Stimulus: Any detectable change in an organism’s internal or external environment that triggers a functional reaction or response.
  • Homeostasis: The self-regulating process by which biological systems maintain a stable internal environment while adjusting to changing external conditions.
  • Sexual Reproduction: A process where two parents combine genetic material to create genetically diverse offspring.
  • Asexual Reproduction: A process where one parent creates a genetically identical clone of itself.
  • Growth: The physical process of increasing in size, mass, or cell number over time.
  • Development: The process of change and maturation where an organism develops more complex structures or functions (e.g., tadpole to frog).
  • Evolution: The gradual change in the inherited traits of a population over successive generations.

Biological Concepts and Examples

  • Sweating on a hot day: Homeostasis. Sweat evaporates to cool the body and maintain a stable internal temperature.
  • Baby growing into an adult: Growth and development. This process increases physical size and changes complexity over time.
  • Importance of organization: It allows biological systems to survive, work efficiently, and adapt to changes.
  • Responding to a stimulus: A plant bending toward a window to capture sunlight.
  • Is fire alive? No. Fire expands and uses energy, but it lacks cells, contains no DNA, and cannot maintain homeostasis.
  • Role of DNA: It is the universal blueprint that stores instructions for development, survival, and passing on traits.
  • Stimulus and response example: Hearing a loud noise (stimulus) and flinching (response).
  • Importance of cells: They are the fundamental structural and functional units of all life.
  • Metabolism definition & example: The process of turning food into energy. For example, eating an apple to create ATP for muscle movement.
  • Life without cells: No. Cell theory states all living things have cells. This is why viruses are considered non-living.
