Basque Poetry: A Historical Overview

Flower-Games (1851-1879)

Antoine Abbey, a great patron of Zuberoa, organized festivals to promote Basque culture and tradition in the mid-19th century. Poets presented their work, fostering Basque culture and paving the way for future endeavors. Notable participants included Xaho Augustine, Duvoisin, Intxauspe, Arturo Campion, and Prince Bonaparte.

Romanticism and Basque Culture

Romanticism influenced the evolution of Basque poetry, bringing attention to folklore and language. Collections of songs, romances, and melodies by F. Michel, Vinson, Manterola, and others emerged during this period. Flower-Games celebrated poetry, with winners including Elizanburu, Larralde, Adem, and Arrese Beitia.

Elizanburu Juan Bautista (1828-1891)

Life: Born in Sara, Elizanburu studied at the seminary in Larresoron. He pursued a military career, reaching the rank of captain in Napoleon III’s army. Retiring in 1870, he taught Basque language in his hometown.

Works: Elizanburu wrote numerous poems and songs. Notable works include”Remote””Morning””Last Night’s Party””Solferino’s Blind” and”Maria” He won several prizes at Flower-Games.

Critical Review: Elizanburu’s work is characterized by careful craftsmanship, a rich vocabulary, and elegant structures. His poetry reflects his love for the Basque Country, nature, and tranquility.

Felipe Arrese Beitia (1841-1906)

Life: Known as”Otxandio santugiñe” Arrese was a sculptor and poet from Otxandio. He studied drawing in Vitoria and developed his skills in stone and wood.

Works: In 1879, Arrese won first prize at the Flower-Games organized by Antoine Abbey with his poem”Farewell to the Basque Mother” This poem became a success, and he published a collection of poems in 1900.

Critical Review: Arrese’s poetry is praised for its natural flow and emotional depth. His work explores themes of Basque identity, customs, and the loss of traditional values.

Aitzol (1896 -1936)

Life: Aitzol’s life was cut short by the Spanish Civil War. He was executed by Franco’s forces.

Works: Aitzol founded the Mondragón literary association and organized events to promote new literary work. He published several collections of poems, including”Euzko Olertiak”

Critical Review: Aitzol encouraged poets to write in a style that was accessible to the people. He criticized avant-garde poetry, believing it alienated the majority of readers.

Xabier Agirre whee JOSE MARIA (1896-1933)

Life: Born in Zarautz, Agirre studied in Toulouse and Madrid. He worked as a journalist and politician.

Works: Agirre published poems in the book”Pasodoble-eye” and a collection of prose works,”Itz”

Critical Review: Agirre’s poetry is highly personal and lyrical. He was influenced by French symbolism, particularly Baudelaire and Verlaine. Agirre’s use of Basque language and musicality sets him apart as a unique voice in Basque poetry.
