Analyzing First Impressions and Societal Shifts

Unit 1 – People

Opinion Essay: Are First Impressions Reliable?

People often believe that first impressions are accurate, but I’m sure that this is not always the case. When we meet someone for the first time, we usually judge them not only by their appearance but also by their body language and the way they speak. However, despite these clues, our opinion can be completely wrong.

I was wondering why we trust first impressions so much, and I think it is due to the fact that we live fast-paced lives and want to understand people quickly. As time passes, we often realise that someone who seemed quite unfriendly at first is actually incredibly kind. Apart from that, people sometimes behave differently because they are nervous or tired.

Since personalities are complex, it takes time to catch up with who someone really is. If we gave people more opportunities, we would probably be surprised. If I judged everyone only by first impressions, I would miss a bit of their true character.

To sum up, although first impressions can be useful, they are not reliable enough to judge a person properly.

✍️ Writing 1: The Importance of Understanding People

Understanding people is not always easy, not only because personalities are complex but also because everyone behaves differently depending on the situation. When we meet someone new, we often rely on first impressions, although these can be misleading.

I was wondering why misunderstandings happen so often, and I believe it is due to poor communication. Apart from words, body language plays an important role as well. For example, someone may seem quite distant, despite being incredibly friendly once you get to know them better. As time passes, we usually catch up with the real personality of a person.

Also, modern life has changed the way we interact. Since many conversations happen online, people sometimes find it difficult to express emotions clearly. After that, conflicts can appear simply because messages are misunderstood.

If people made more effort to listen, relationships would improve significantly. If I judged others too quickly, I would miss a bit of what makes them unique. To sum up, understanding people requires patience, open-mindedness and time. I’m sure that those who try to see beyond appearances build stronger and more meaningful relationships.

✍️ Writing 2: Are People Becoming Less Patient?

Nowadays, many people believe that society is becoming less patient, and I’m sure that this idea is not completely wrong. Not only do we expect quick results, but we also want immediate responses from others.

I was wondering whether technology is responsible for this change. Due to smartphones and social media, we have become used to instant communication. Apart from that, fast-paced lifestyles leave little time for reflection. As a result, people often feel frustrated when things do not happen quickly.

Despite these issues, patience is still essential in relationships. For example, friendships require time to grow, and people need opportunities to catch up after misunderstandings. Although it can be difficult, learning to wait can improve emotional balance.

If people slowed down a bit, they would probably feel less stressed. If I didn’t try to be patient, I would react emotionally to every situation. To sum up, although modern life encourages speed, patience remains a valuable quality that helps us understand others better and live more calmly.

Unit 2 – Places

Email Giving Advice: Visiting My City

Hi Alex,

I was wondering if you’re still planning to visit my city next month, because I’d love to give you some advice. Not only is the city beautiful, but it is also full of history and culture.

First of all, you should visit the old town, as it is quite small and easy to explore on foot. Apart from museums, you can enjoy local food as well as street markets. After that, I recommend walking by the river, which is incredibly relaxing.

Despite being a busy city, it has many green areas too. Since public transport is cheap, you won’t have any problems moving around. If I were you, I would avoid visiting during rush hour, because it can be a bit stressful.

I’m sure that you’ll enjoy your stay, and if you need help, just let me know.

See you soon!

✍️ Writing 1: Living in a Big City vs a Small Town

Living in a big city has advantages, not only in terms of job opportunities but also regarding entertainment and culture. However, small towns also offer benefits that should not be ignored.

In large cities, people can enjoy museums, restaurants and events, as well as efficient public transport. Apart from that, cities allow people to meet individuals from different backgrounds. Despite these advantages, city life can be incredibly stressful due to traffic and noise.

On the other hand, small towns are usually quieter and more relaxed. Since everything is close, daily routines are simpler. After that, people often develop stronger relationships with their neighbours. Although job opportunities are limited, the quality of life can be quite high.

If I had to choose, I would probably live in a city for work and move to a small town later in life. If people considered their priorities carefully, they would make better decisions about where to live. To sum up, both options have advantages, and the best choice depends on personal needs and lifestyle.

✍️ Writing 2: A Place That Has Changed Over Time

The city where I grew up has changed significantly over the years, not only in appearance but also in atmosphere. When I was younger, it was a quiet place, although it is now much busier.

Due to tourism and economic development, many new buildings have appeared. Apart from shopping centres, modern cafés and hotels have transformed the city centre. As a result, more people visit the area, which has improved the local economy.

Despite these positive changes, some problems have appeared too. Traffic has increased, and housing has become quite expensive. Since many residents moved away, the sense of community is not as strong as it used to be.

If the city invested more in green spaces, it would become more balanced. I’m sure that development is necessary, but it should be controlled. To sum up, although change is inevitable, preserving local identity is just as important as economic growth.

Unit 3 – Things

For-and-Against Essay: Technology in Our Lives

Technology has changed our lives dramatically, not only at work but also in the way we communicate. Due to modern devices, people can stay in touch easily, as well as work from anywhere.

One advantage is that technology helps us catch up with friends and family who live far away. Also, it saves time and makes everyday tasks simpler. Despite these benefits, there are some disadvantages too. Many people spend a bit too much time on their phones, which affects real-life communication.

Although technology is incredibly useful, it can be stressful. If people used it more responsibly, they would have better balance in their lives. If I didn’t have access to technology, I would find daily life quite difficult, but I wouldn’t feel so distracted.

To sum up, technology brings many advantages, but it should be used carefully. I’m sure that the future will depend on how wisely we choose to use it.

✍️ Writing 1: The Role of Technology in Education

Technology plays an essential role in education today, not only by providing information but also by changing the way students learn. Due to digital tools, learning has become more flexible and accessible.

Apart from online resources, students can communicate with teachers easily and catch up with lessons if they miss class. As well as improving organisation, technology allows students to work at their own pace. Despite these advantages, there are some drawbacks.

One major issue is distraction. Since students have constant access to devices, they may lose concentration. Although technology can be incredibly useful, it must be used responsibly. After that, traditional methods still play an important role.

If schools trained students better, technology would be more effective. If I were a teacher, I would combine digital tools with face-to-face interaction. To sum up, technology enhances education, but only when it is balanced with discipline and guidance.

✍️ Writing 2: Consumerism and Modern Society

Consumerism has become a defining feature of modern society, not only affecting the economy but also influencing personal values. People often buy things they do not need, due to advertising and social pressure.

Apart from necessities, many products are purchased to create an image. As well as encouraging spending, companies promote constant upgrading of devices. Despite this, excessive consumption can cause financial stress and environmental damage.

Since resources are limited, people should reflect more on their habits. If consumers bought fewer items, waste would decrease. If I didn’t control my spending, I would face serious financial problems.

Although buying new things can be enjoyable, it should be done responsibly. To sum up, consumerism offers convenience and comfort, but a more conscious approach is necessary for a sustainable future. I’m sure that small changes in behaviour can make a big difference.
